woman flossingWe’ve got a question for you, and be honest here — are you flossing regularly? Everyone should floss at least once a day. Unfortunately, many people do not manage to floss as often as recommended. But the truth is, flossing is an absolutely crucial preventive dentistry step for continued oral health. Keep reading to learn more about why this habit is so important, and how you can successfully add it to your nighttime routine for a cleaner, healthier smile.

Why Flossing Matters

As soon as people have two teeth that touch each other — which occurs in very early childhood —  daily flossing should begin. This habit may seem like an added bonus to a good tooth brushing routine, but flossing is actually an integral part of every clean and healthy smile. People who manage to do it at least once daily are at a reduced risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath, and a host of other oral health hazards. Flossing between teeth is the only way to remove the food particles, plaque, and bacteria that your toothbrush just cannot manage to reach. In fact, some professionals contend that if you had to choose between brushing and flossing, the latter would be the smarter pick. Thankfully we don’t have to make that call.

Develop a Flossing Habit in Two Weeks

Most people would love to floss daily like they know they should, but they are just unable to develop the habit. Yes, you are very tired at night and it just seems like a time-consuming and unpleasant extra step. But considering the fact that flossing can reduce your risk of gum disease, tooth loss, and the host of overall health problems that are related to the two, it’s well worth taking the time to develop a flossing routine. They say it only takes two weeks to add a positive habit — here are our tips for making dental floss one of yours.

  • Avoid the “out of sight, out of mind” excuse. Leave the floss somewhere you are sure to see it after you have brushed, like right beside the faucet or on your night stand.
  • Leave yourself a sticky note on the mirror.
  • If you usually brush your teeth at the same time every evening, set an alarm on your phone.
  • Get an accountability partner — talk to a close friend or your partner about the fact that you want to start flossing and have them check in on you.
  • Make your progress visible by checking off the days you have managed to floss on the calendar.
  • Visit your dentist for a checkup and cleaning and bask in the positive reinforcement when your hygienist compliments your clean gums and healthy teeth!
